Most of what you see from the outside is the brown sweater that covers her long torso. But if you could lie on the sidewalk and look up, you would see the crooked neck and bent sideways head of the tall girl as she tries to peer out the window. Jill says her head has always been bent like that but Jesse says it became that way after the first month of sitting on the school bus with her head jammed into the ceiling. The other kids tease her, calling her giraffe and treetop. She just stares out the window as if she doesn’t hear them. We’ve talked about sitting next to her, about tilting our own heads sideways and seeing what she sees out that window. Jill says she’ll do it if Jesse goes first, and Jesse says she’ll do it if Jill goes first. In the end, we don’t leave our seat. Jesse shows us her new lip-gloss, and it’s glitter pink, so we all have to try it on.
