School Bus: Window #1

The red-haired girl fights to keep her mouth closed. Often she holds her breath for minutes at a time. Once she even passed out. She’s tried sealing her mouth with her hands, even tried wrapping her wool scarf thickly about her face. Still, her breath escapes, making shapes of steam. It’s not that she doesn’t like her creations. She loves them. She loves the robins and jays that fly from her mouth, the cats that spring after them, the dogs that bound after the cats, and so on. It’s what the others will do. Almost as soon as the shapes rise from her steamy breath, the others shoot spitballs at her beautiful creatures. This day she is determined to keep her breath inside. But no matter how hard she tries, it seeps out. When the kids gun down the animals, she screams so loud the Bus Driver slams on the brakes. It is a long scream, and she walks out of her mouth on the tail end of it. The Bus Driver unbuckles His seat belt and rises to quell the problem. The others open fire. The red-haired girl scatters in the air.
