Necessary Fiction
Doing our best since 2009

Happy Saturday, everyone. Here's some reading to catch up on this weekend:

Celine Nguyen, a new writer for us, reviewed The Moons: Fire Rooster to Earth Dog by by Yuxin Zhao, published by Calamari Archive. You can read more by Celine here at her website and her newsletter.

Our featured story this week was "Pitaya" by Radian Hong, another writer new to our pages.

And in our research notes series, Snowden Wright wrote about his new novel The Queen City Detective Agency. Snowden previously shared some research notes for his book Play Pretty Blues, so we're glad to be sharing his work again.

Finally, I'd like to mention a couple of books by contributors both being published on September 1 and available for preorder both online and (best of all) through a local, independent bookstore if there's one accessible to you.

First, Homing: Instincts of a Rustbelt Feminist, an essay collection by Sherrie Flick, is forthcoming from University of Nebraska Press. Sherrie has written for us a few times over the years, including spending a month as our writer in residence, and I'm excited to see this new collection.

And second, All Daughters Are Awesome Everywhere, a story collection by Demisty D. Bellinger also coming from University of Nebraska Press. Demisty has also appeared in our a pages a few times before.

Thanks for reading,
Steve Himmer
