It's Saturday again so here we are
Necessary Fiction
Doing our best since 2009

It's Saturday again and I hope you've had a good week. Here's what we've been up to:

We featured a review of The Holy Days of Gregorio Pasos, a novel by Rodrigo Restrepo Montoya. The reviewer was our book reviews editor Diane Josefowicz, who has written numerous reviews for us over the years. Her second novel L'Air du Temps will be published next month and is available for preorders now.

On Wednesday we brought you "Top Dollar," a story by AJ Atwater. This is AJ's first publication with us, and we're grateful for the opportunity.

Then on Friday we shared some research notes by Frank Haberle about his novel Downlanders, which is available now. Frank was one of our earliest contributors, way back in March 2009, with his story "Beauty" — a story which has now become part of this novel. We also published "South of Hartford" in 2012, and it's great to have him back in our pages.

Since starting this newsletter a few weeks ago, and especially after reaching out to past contributors to let them know about it, I've had the pleasure of hearing from a number of you about what you've been writing and publishing and otherwise doing. Thanks for that. I won't be able to include every piece of news in the newsletter but I will try to highlight things when I can. Such as hearing from Rémy Ngamije ("Nine Months Since Forever") that he is now publishing Doek!,

a free, independent, and Pan-African online literary magazine produced in Windhoek, Namibia. It publishes short fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and visual art from Namibia, Africa, and the African diaspora.

I encourage you to spend some time reading their past and present issues.

And I also heard from David Rose about his collection Interpolated Stories, a collaboration with artist Leah Leaf published not so long ago. I'm always excited to read new work from David and I can't recommend highly enough his previous collection Posthumous Stories, or his novels Vault and Meridian. You'll thank yourself for reading any or all of them.

Thanks for reading,

Steve Himmer
