The stories and reviews we've published lately
Necessary Fiction
Doing our best since 2009

Thanks for subscribing to our newsletter, and welcome!

This is the first installment we're sending and I'm sure we'll figure out the best way to use this newsletter as we go forward, but the idea is to provide a weekly update of what we've published so folks don't miss it. We'll also include contributor news and announcements of our own as well as from other literary magazines and small presses that might be of interest.

This week, we published "The Jump Humping Handbook for Dummies," short fiction by Ryan Habermeyer. And we shared Colm McKenna's review of The Delivery by Margarita García Robayo, translated by Megan McDowell.

The week before we featured Courtney Craggett's short story "Pyro" and Willem Marx's review of The Story of the Paper Crown by Józef Czechowicz, translated by Frank Garrett.

In contributor news, Susan Muaddi Darraj's novel Behind You Is The Sea will be published on January 16 and we encourage you to give it a look. We'll have several other contributor books out this month to tell you about in upcoming weeks.

As for submissions, we are currently reading both for general fiction submissions and for a themed "Leap" series to be published in February. Leap submissions close tomorrow, January 7, so if you have something to send please do it soon! Information about both submission calls is available here. And here are the submission calls to expect in the months ahead:

Elsewhere on the web, our friends at EPOCH are open for online submissions this month, and while you're at their site we recommend reading their current piece of featured fiction, "Fever To Tell" by Adalena Kavanagh

That's all for now but please feel free to be in touch with any questions or comments, or with contributor news of your own.

Thanks for reading,

Steve Himmer
