Necessary Fiction
Doing our best since 2009

Here we are again, in your inbox. I hope everyone's had a good week.

On Monday, we shared Shara Kronmal's review of Pale Shadows by Dominique Fortier, translated from the French by Rhonda Mullins and published by Coach House Books. Shara has reviewed a number of books for us now and we're pleased to have her back in our pages.

And our featured story this week, the next in our series of summer flash fiction, was "Entrance Exam" by Oscar Mancinas.  We previously published Oscar's research notes for his collection To Live And Die In El Valle and we're very glad to share some of his fiction now, too.

Congratulations to early contributor Greg Gerke whose novel In the Suavity of the Rock is about to be published by Splice

And to Nicole Wolverton, whose novel A Misfortune of Lake Monsters will also be published in a few days, by CamCat Books.

We're still reading for our October series of spooky stories with the theme "Dangerous Creatures," but submissions will close on June 30. General submissions will reopen on August 1.

And on July 13 our fiction editor, Lacey Dunham, will teach a Zoom class on "Demystifying the Publishing Process" for The Loft.

Finally, if you'd like to send a couple of sentences about what you're reading this summer — for fun, for research, whatever it is — please get those to me in a reply.

Thanks for reading,
Steve Himmer
