Necessary Fiction
Doing our best since 2009

Happy Saturday, friends. Here's what we've been up to this week:

We shared Emily Webber's review of Below The Falls by Ross McMeekin, published recently by Thirty West. We're glad to feature Emily's third book review for us, and we also had the pleasure of publishing Ross' fiction in our early days.

Our featured story this week was "The Ghost" by Julia Viejo, translated from Spanish by Jacob Rogers. It's always exciting to share a new translation and expand our reading possibilities — thanks to Julia and Jacob for trusting us with their work.

In contributor news, Sudha Balagopal's novel Nose Ornaments is forthcoming from Ad Hoc Fiction and is available for preorder now. We published Sudha's story "Polka Dot Swimsuit" a few years ago.

Kate Segriff's collection Animals In Captivity is newly published by Riddle Fence. You can read sample Kate's fiction with her story "Four Horses."

And the editors' selection for the 2024 Best Small Fictions anthology were announced recently, including two stories we published: "Leap" by Sara Fawn Montgomery and "Already Among The Clouds" by Ibrahim Babátúndé Ibrahim. Congratulations to both of them and to all of the other writers we know who also had their work selected this year. Look for the anthology from Alternating Current Press in fall.

We're getting ready to kick off our summer flash fiction series, with some stories I think you'll really enjoy. And from now until June 30 submissions are open for our October series of Spooky Stories, this year with the theme "Dangerous Creatures."

Finally, I've been sending this weekly newsletter for a few months now and it's been great to hear from so many of you while getting into its groove. Feel free to be in touch by email with ideas, suggestions, or questions as we go forward. And please, if you're enjoying it and finding it useful, tell your writer and reader friends who might also be interested.

Thanks for reading,
Steve Himmer
